Together with his wife, Madhuri Kataria, Dr. Madan Kataria started Laughter Yoga as a social movement in March 1995. However, it has since then grown to a worldwide professional method to target health challenges, loneliness, burn-out, stress, team issues, performance, and many more day-to-day challenges at work and at home.

How Laughter Can Improve Your Life

Laughter is more than the signature sound of humour and happiness that’s unique to everyone. It’s an experience – one that reverberates throughout your whole body.

The benefits of laughter are not to be taken for granted.

Every time you laugh, fifteen facial muscles contract, the size of your larynx reduces by 50%, and your tear ducts are activated.

Able to induce euphoric feelings with a similar effect to morphine, laughter can instantly transform mood, help you bond with a loved one or stranger, and immediately lift your spirits.

In fact, did you know that laughing 100 times a day gives your body a thorough workout – one that’s comparable to spending fifteen minutes on an exercise bike?

Not only that, laughing reduces blood pressure, is excellent for the cardiovascular system, and improves memory and cognitive functioning.

And that’s not all. Scientific studies have found that laughter increases the amount of T and B cells which are the body’s natural defence against viruses and cancer other illnesses – even cancer.

So, you could argue that the more you laugh, the stronger your body’s resistance to serious illness will be.

With clear emotional and physiological benefits, there’s no denying that laughter will improve your quality of your life.

Attaining that perfect work-life balance is ultimate-goal for many in the UK. To achieve this and enjoy all that you do, those moments of levity are paramount.

Interested in learning more of the identifiable universal health benefits of laughter? Here are five simple reasons why you should be laughing more.

Mood Enhancement

Leading studies have shown that laughter can improve people’s mood and general happiness.

Think of it this way, if you walk around with a black cloud hanging over your head, the way you perceive what’s happening to and all around you is different than if the metaphorical clouds lift and the sun breaks through.

Laughter is one of the cornerstones of sustained happiness. It can cultivate gratitude for a shared moment or solitary experience.

Even pretend laughter, without any humorous stimuli can improve mood.

Try laughing without something funny occurring and you’ll find that your brain doesn’t immediately register whether the stimuli is genuine or not, yet the physical act of laughter will lift your mood.

Research has also suggested that laughter has an analgesic quality that reduces unconscious pain, something that’s paramount for regulating mood.

The mood enhancement and mental benefits of laughter can help you to recognise positivity and forget negative thoughts in a heartbeat.

Improves Memory

At one time or another we’ve all cursed our memory.

Whether it has been when you’ve returned from the shops only to discover you’ve bought everything but the one item that you went out for, or that dentist appointment that you booked months in advance only to forget on the day, forgetfulness seems to be symptomatic of our busy lives.

The good news for anyone prone to bouts of forgetfulness is that laughter improves memory.

How?

The connections and associations that the brain forms when learning can be heightened by combining basic learning with an emotional response like laughing.

Improving the degree of association with different parts of your brain, such as logic, reason or amusement, makes it easier to remember facts and details because you have created that additional emotional connection.

So, let’s say for example that you work in an office where it’s all systems go.

One where it feels like every singe day there’s a million and one things to do and remember.

Try introducing laughter to your role (exercised with discretion and professionalism, of course) and you may just find that the benefits of laughter and elevated mood help you to perform your role with finesse and agility – and remember too, a happy team is a productive team.

Get your colleagues laughing and the day will surely go quicker.

Promotes Creativity

For many people, creativity is paramount to their professional and personal lives.

Creativity can even be potent enough to become a significant part of someone’s identity, meaning that separating them from their ability to envision and execute ideas that others cannot is who they are.

Did you know that laughter promotes creativity? Laughing has a myriad of effects on the chemical processes in the body.

In reducing stress hormones, increasing endorphins, and increasing oxygenation to the brain and blood, you will feel a spike in creativity – something that is highly valued in people’s professional lives and hobbies away from work.

If you feel sluggish, uninspired, or worse, demotivated to pursue your artistic, or any creative, endeavours in your spare time, try laughing.

Laughing improves general neurological health, bolstering your body’s natural support system.

This is one of the core health benefits of laughter. Getting that work-life balance is paramount to sustained emotional and physical health – and something as simple as laughing can have a profound effective on productivity and impetus.

After all, the better we feel, the more likely we are to find the motivation to get done what we need to.

Bolsters Resilience and Coping Skills

Life is an interesting journey; we all experience peaks and valleys, face adversity, have obstacles to overcome, and bask in those moments when the stars just seem to align perfectly.

Often when faced with trials, it as much about how you manage the circumstance as it is the actual circumstance itself.

In many cases, it’s about the big picture.

Think of it this way: you’re driving home from work and your car falters fives miles from home. It’s raining. You’ve had a trying day and you need to get home and put the dinner on. You can give into frustration or anger, or take a moment, breathe deeply and think about how to solve the problem.

Now, let’s compound the circumstance.

What if your car was in for a service a week or two before and every potential reliability issue was addressed, apart from the one that’s caused you to break down?

You could either get disheartened and question, why me? Or, laugh at the irony of the situation and act positively to resolve the issue.

In this situation, there are few more impactful actions than employing mental benefits of laughter.

Lightening your mood can have a transformative effect, bolstering resilience and coping skills in that vital moment – or in all future circumstances.

Reduces Blood Pressure

High blood pressure (or hypertension) can have a profoundly negative effect on our health.

Acknowledged as being one of the primary culprits of heart disease and stroke, sustained stress is something that everyone should avoid, regardless of age.

However, consider this: it’s hard to be stressed when you’re laughing. Recent studies have found that laughing can reduce blood pressure. One of the more referenced study is one conducted in 2011 at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions.

Researchers took a diligent and thorough approach to discover the heath benefits of laughter and discovered something rather interesting.

Using playful eye contact and breathing exercises, 79 participants took part in a series of music and laughter therapies.

After each session was concluded, blood pressure readings were taken.

Within 3 months the study found that the blood pressure readings of participants were reduced on average by 7 mmHg (millimetres of mercury.)

In comparison, participants in the music therapy discovered that their blood pressure readings were reduced on average by 6 mmHg (millimetres of mercury.)

The conclusion? Laughter is more effective than music in reducing blood pressure. Feeling stressed or anxious? Laugh – it may well be the salvation you’re looking for!

Why Laughter Yoga?

The success of laughter studies on reducing blood pressure and other health ailments has led to a unique and uniquely effective form of treatment – laughter yoga.

The benefits of laughter yoga are evident from your first session. Unsure what to expect?

Come along to a session at UnitedMind Laughter Yoga.

You won’t find a comedian with a microphone telling jokes whilst you’re concentrating on holding a Mountain pose, Forward Fold or Downward-Facing Dog. You don’t even need to be in a jolly mood.

Laughter is initiated as a form of bodily exercise.

Participants sit together in a group and laugh. Eye contact is completely up to you, but be prepared, this can often lead to uncontrollable fits of giggles.

Playing with Nonsense, Paradoxial Intervention, Gibberish Improvisation

Masterclass & Certification

Over the weekend we will explore and deepen in the field of Non Linear Interventions based gibberish, the art of nonsense and working with Humour Drama Paradoxical Coaching.

Some of the exercises are playful and some are therapeutic.

The course is designed for Laughter Yoga practitioners, medical clowns, drama therapists, theater improvisation actors, expressive arts therapists, psychotherapists, psycho dramatists, logotherapists and everybody who wants to add more nonsense and non linear approach to his or her life.

Why attend?

IMPROVISATION is not only important in the workshop but you are ‘forced’ to improvise in REAL LIFE when you plan but God Laughs upon you (“LAUGHTER” is about that).

You will get better skills as to how to “play with nonsense”, enjoy it and channel it into an opportunity for success and empowerment.

The deep understanding of the concept of NONSENSE will provide you with skills of how to stop fighting reality and searching for “one absolute truth”, while realising “anything goes”.

Hence, you’ll become less disappointed by ‘circumstances’ or life’s surprises and more of an accepting person.

Since practice of Gibberish Improvisation awakes the right hemisphere activity that enables you to be more creative and innovative when you face Surprises of Life and personal “tzunamis”, or else when you are bound to perform any daily tasks without losing vital energy on over thinking & planning.

Practicing of Gibberish on the Stage (and in Real Life) will make you an Artist as anyone can be. As you will experience the Essence of Catharsis you will also get certified as Gibberish Theater Improvisation Certified Leader.

What can you expect from the course?

  • Ways to unload and delete the old belief system and implant a new codification (Epigenetics) in the subconcious mind
  • We will play , experiment with the whole spectrum of emotions and yet devote time in the field of Non Destructive Aggresiveness (Psychologist Bach) , playing with our Anger and recognizing it as a vital part of us to be administered and acknowledged.

We will

  • learn and experiment on stage with self-acceptance, of ourselves, unconditioned to our failures, weaknesses, imperfections or what the others might think of us. We will befriend with ourselves
  • learn how to take the Nonsensical Tools to help us in living our life fearlessly and Improvisingly , leaving the ways of behaviour which have stopped to serve our existence and being and applying new life-affirmative codes of action.
  • improve our capacity to react to unexpected life situations, challenges and surprises (improvisation for real life).
  • enhance the connection with your inner child, (curious, inquisitive, daring, free and creative).
  • play with nonsense, using the tool of gibberish. Learn to let go of logic, thinking and talking including your inner narrative.
  • connect with our inner clown (fool) and explore the ‘wisdom of the fools’.
  • explore some of the basics of Positive Psychology and logotherapy (based on the work of Viktor Frankl). Introduction to provocative therapy and paradoxical intention.
  • explore para-logical choice for self-empowerment: Coaching in taking decisions that require inner strength and moving out of our comfort zone.
  • learn tools and exercises to facilitate your own nonsense & gibberish improvisation workshops.

This is a professional leaders certificate program in gibberish and the art of nonsense.

No previous knowledge is required.

The training is of a therapeutic character, and will include an individual protagonist work on the stage through the Non Linear and Clownish Interventions (Paradoxical Coaching).

We will connect all with Non Linear Psychotherapy (Frank Farrely, Viktor Frankl).

Laughter Thoughts from Yours Truly

When I started teaching Laughter Yoga Leaders to boldly venture into the world and share Laughter Yoga my mission became creating opportunity.

Opportunity for trained Laughter Yoga Professionals, who really wanted to share Laughter Yoga because it is so amazingly good for us, to facilitate events with potential for starting their own business, should they choose to do this.

Opportunity to initiate positive change in the workplace and in life outside work and create non-judgmental environments for personal and professional growth.

One of the great opportunities that has grown out of teaching Laughter Yoga Leaders and Laughter Yoga Teachers for me is working with Holistic Laughter Coach Melanie Bloch, and together with her I deliver the highest standards of the certified training with two dedicated Laughter Ambassadors and the extra accreditation

We have done this now for two years, Melanie and I, and the course is a deep-dive into laughter realness and release! The Laughter Yoga Leader Training in London is exceptional and I say that very humble with the basis in the feedback we receive from our two days of teaching new Laughter Yoga Leaders.

I had been running workshops for some years when I started teaching and I loved it, I still love it – and for the ‘right’ reasons I feel, those that resonate in the heart-space and make you tremble a bit when you sense the wonderful change in people.

But whatever your reason for wanting to share Laughter Yoga with others, there is a growing need for Laughter Yoga Professionals as workplace and personal wellbeing is in focus. Individuals as well as organisations are looking for methods that are easily applied as well as connecting us in the real world outside technology and social media.

It has been a journey of persistence, and I am excited to see the growth in awareness of Laughter Yoga as a method for mental health, workplace and personal health, physical health, and social health, with more workshop and interested parties being passed through to the network of Laughter Yoga Professionals who really want to lead the way and spread laughter.

Even if it is purely for the sake of connecting with like-minded people!

You are part of my tribe of people who enjoy laughter and the practice of Laughter Yoga, and if you want, then there is plenty of laughter to share.

I do not provide you with everything but together we can bring laughter to people who really need a good deep-felt chuckle and a guffaw more often than it maybe currently happens.

My mission is to share Laughter Yoga as a way of engaging, connecting and enjoying life, people, health, and abundance altogether.

Now, who’s with me?!

Love, Laughter and Peace

The Playing Human Conference – June 2020!

A superb line up is currently being introduced. We started in February when we introduced The Miracle Man, Ant Bennett, in March you met the YES Man, Dave Cornthwaite, in April you were acquainted with Play Expert, Yesim Kunter, in May Kate Hull Rodgers was on display, June you got acquainted with Sue Haswell and this month we introduce you to Madan Kataria.

Please welcome Dr Madan Lataria to London!

Meet Dr Madan Kataria – Founder of Laughter Clubs worldwide

Dr Madan Kataria brought laughter to the parks of Mumbai in March 1995 with the first Laughter Clubs kicking off in his ‘hood’. From then Laughter Clubs and Laughter Yoga grew to a worldwide movement and practice.

Together with his wife, Madhuri Kataria, he travelled the world and trained people to start laughter clubs, share Laughter Yoga and change the face of the Earth with laughter.

I met Madan first time in 2008 when he came to London for an interview. Before then I had been introduced to him via email and Skype back in 2002 and I started the Laughter Club International (UK) with his guidance and support. Since then I have had the pleasure of inviting Madan and Madhuri to Manchester and London/St Albans at Laughter Yoga Conferences.

A quarter or a century with Laughter Yoga and the spreading of Laughter Yoga has been amazing to be part of.

Madan and Madhuri are as busy as ever with conferences around the world, Laughter Yoga Guiness Book attempts, and the pledge for opening the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020 so it is a real privilege to be able to welcome the Dr and Mrs Kataria back to the UK for the first time in 5 years when we open the doors to our Laughter Yoga 25th Anniversary in London on 5-7 June 2020. .

“We are paying very high price for taking life seriously, now its time to take laughter seriously” Madan Kataria, Founder of Laughter Yoga Worldwide

Read more about Madan and Madhuri Kataria on www.laughteryoga.org – and look out for the mid-month story of her life…

Make sure you book soon – even if 2020 still seems a long way away.

Did you notice who else is coming?

These truly motivational people are not only there to talk, they are coming to inspire and move us all with playfulness and attitude!

Please get in touch about The Playing Human Conference & Laughter Yoga 25th Anniversary, our courses, workshops, conferences, laughter clubs and other events via email, info@unitedmind.co.uk, phone 0800 1214 714 or mobile 07736 341 717.

A day with Oxford University Press

Diarmuid Carter of Digeo Productions contacted me to see if there was a way we could create a video for Oxford University Press as part of their English course for students with English as a second language.

Of course we could!

I ventured out to Oxford – the the cricket grounds – on a Wednesday in June to spend the day with the production team. On the way I practiced my lines to get them perfect.

However, it is tougher than it may sound when you actually know the ins and outs of Laughter yoga as I know I do.

Memorising someone else’s lines is a real challenge and made me truly appreciate the sometimes-struggle Laughter Yoga Leaders in training go through when they prepare to deliver a short verbal presentation on day-2 of the Laughter Yoga Leader Training…

The team was very understanding and in the end the line “It increases your heart rate and lowers your blood pressure so the effects are similar to gentle exercise and you get a nice workout!” was in the box!

It was a great and fun day for all of us – as per feedback – and I learned a lot about filming and voice over recording which is amazing to observe in such a digital work environment.

It still works with sheets and blankets covering the walls of the space… Fun!

Please get in touch to hear more about our partnerships, our training, workshops, and other events via email, info@unitedmind.co.uk, phone 0800 1214 714 or mobile 07736 341 717.

Summer Pondering from Yours Truly

It is never about me but about the people who venture onto laughter training or into workshops, events and conferences.

You have such courage.

The individuals and organisations who have learned from me make me a better teacher and facilitator every day.

I am so proud (for the lack of a more eloquent word) of the Laughter Yoga Leaders and Laughter Yoga Teachers who chose my training and went on to create their own ripples that continue to connect us, and to write their stories along with the history of Laughter Yoga in the UK and world.

Some have come from far away and some have come from what seems to be ‘just around the corner’.

When we walk side by side and change more than one path we have a higher chance of greater impact. Laughter Yoga is about positive change that happens from within, and it happens with the daily practice of not only laughing, but becoming centered through breathing and being.

I have nothing bad to say about any of the people I have trained and worked with, only love, compassion along with a huge sense of excitement to have new play-friends, and I welcome new students of life and Laughter Yoga at any point in time with support and laughter, joy and connection, and with experience and wisdom.

Love, Laughter and Peace

World Laughter Day Thought from Yours Truly

World Laughter Day has been celebrated in the UK since first time we held it in St Albans in 2004 – it got a bit bigger in 2005 and 2005 is possible the more official year for our first World Laughter Celebration in the UK…

Looking back over the years of celebrating laughter brings some wonderful thoughts and I think for many people the moments we shared laughter are some of the happiest memories we have.

Laughter has also brought me tears, serious contemplation, and distress.

However, walking in front can sometimes be faced with different challenges than when we submit to a less active role in the community and in the workplace.

Regardless what has been in the past I love everyone who has spent laughter time with me no matter where and how we are connected or disconnected at present. Laughter Yoga is a community of people who have found laughter to be a connecting and healing force of life!

I am up to something with the transformational power of laughter and Laughter Yoga is my superpower – as is Danish but that is a different story altogether…

If you see something in the change you have experience through laughing then Laughter Yoga may be something for you. I may not be the right teacher for you but I may be able to point you in the direction of someone who will nurture you and your laughter to new levels.

World Laughter Day is a celebration of our differences coming together in one whirlpool of laughter for world peace.

Different laughter, different opinions, different people, different circumstances.

When we share laughter we let everything go and become one big chuckle-muscle together in greatness and peaceful agreement.

Please join us in sharing laughter on World Laughter Day 5th May 2019 in St Albans or elsewhere around the UK and the world.

Find your event on www.worldlaughterday.co.uk.

The Playing Human Conference – on its way!

A superb line up is currently being introduced. We started in February when we introduced The Miracle Man, Ant Bennett, in March you met the YES Man, Dave Cornthwaite, in April you were acquainted with Play Expert, Yesim Kunter and this month we have another treat in store for you.

In May we are SO excited to introduce Laughter Therapist, Kate Hull Rodgers.

Meet Kate Hull-Rodgers – Laughter Therapist

If you have already obtrained your Certified Laughter Yoga Leader or Certified Laughter Yoga Teacher qualification through training with UnitedMind and UnitedMind trained teachers you can as leader do all you have learned so far which includes

  • developing your own laughter
  • leading laughter clubs
  • running community and workplace sessions

And as teacher you can do all you have learned as a leader and teacher plus teach the 2-day Certified Laughter Yoga Leader Training.

With the Accreditation there are simply a few extra requirements to comply with in order for teaching accredited training.

These requirements bring a different level of quality and CPD recognition to the qualification as a Laughter Yoga Leader, Teacher and Coach.

Laughter Yoga Leader Training follows a specific structure around the country and world, and Master Trainers around the world follow a specific structure for teaching Laughter Yoga Teacher Training.

It is simply the extra registration of the training in the UK that leaders and teachers have been asking for over the past many years, this has nothing to do with Laughter Yoga International.

It is simply an additional quality stamp for the UK and is not changing the training only adding extra leverage with an extra certificate when you complete the accreditation requirements.

If you don’t want the accreditation you simply do the training as it has  always been.

Meet Yesim Kunter, Play Expert

You have already been introduced to a few of the Key-Note Speakers for The Playing Human Conference in London 5-7 June 2020 and we continue to share the fantastic people in the coming months.

The Laughter Yoga 25th Anniversary and The Playing Human Conference in London on 5-7 June 2020 may seem a long time away but there are still many outstanding people to introduce.

Please meet Yesim Kunter who was briefly introduced in our April Laughter News.

Speaking with Yesim about coming to The Playing Human Conference was great. We instantly connected through our passion for playful adaptation of life and in life, and she has a real story to tell about play at work and all around.

Yesim is a renowned play expert and a creative strategist, She understands behavior of people and how to create new experiences as well as  opportunities within the workplace and in life outside work.

As a keynote speaker she has delivered talks at conferences such as World Innovation Convention, TEDx, and the Global Innovation Forum London, an event where I will be sharing Laughter Yoga this year in November.

With a background in large international toy companies such as Toys R Us, Lego and Hasbro Yesim will certainly be able to share something about playing with us all at The Playing Human Conference.

“If we allow ourselves to Play and have Playful Minds, we will make better connections”, Yesim Kunter.

Please visit www.yesimkunter.com to learn more about Yesim. (under re-construction at the moment)
